The Twins beat the Oakland Athletics this afternoon, giving Minnesota the first sweep of the season, and a three game winning streak.

Hits were plentiful for the Twins as they racked up 16 overall.  They also took 3 walks.

Most impressively, though, were the 3 home runs.   Rene Rivera hit a one run homer, Justin Morneau hit a two run shot, and Trevor Plouffe hit a three run blast.  It’s nice to see some power coming out of the Twins, because that’s an area they’ve been severely lacking so far.

Jason Kubel, Michael Cuddyer, Danny Valencia, and Alexi Casilla all added RBIs as well.

Nick Blackburn gave the Twins 7 solid innings of pitching, giving up only 1 run on 5 hits.

The Twins have been playing well lately.  Hopefully  something sticks.

The Twins didn’t score after the first inning yesterday, but they didn’t need to.

Michael Cuddyer batted in Matt Tolbert (who reached on a fielders choice) and Jason Kubel (who reached on a walk) in the first inning, and then the Twins pitching took over for the rest of the game.

Francisco Liriano pitched a great game, giving the Twins 7 full innings with only 1 run on 3 hits and a walk.  He struck out 9 guys.

I don’t want to get my hopes up too much, but it looked like the Dominant Liriano came out to play.

I’m hoping he’ll stick around this time.

Perkins came in and did his thing in the 8th inning, and Capps closed it out in the 9th for the save.

Hitting wasn’t too impressive.  The Twins also only had 3 hits, and two of them came from Michael Cuddyer.  The other was from Ben Revere.  The Twins managed to take 4 walks, though, so at least they were finding a way to get people on base.

The next step is for them to learn to drive those people home!

Postseason.

Nope, I didn’t accidentally repost yesterday’s article.  Thursday night’s game seemed nearly identical to Wednesday night’s game.  The Twins jumped out to an early lead, only to give it up to the Yankees.  The Twins came back and tied it, but then immediately gave up a couple runs to fall behind.

I was left wondering after the game what it would be like if Joe Mauer, Jim Thome, or Jason Kubel would actually participate in the offense.  I was left to wonder what it would be like playing in a post-season series with a healthy Justin Morneau.

It’s frustrating to watch this team do NOTHING against the Yankees.

There only hope is to win three in a row now.

I have no clue when the last time was that the Twins actually beat the Yankees in three straight games.

Last night Minnesota opened the American League Divisional Series against the New York Yankees.  With a 2 run home run by Michael Cuddyer in the 2nd inning, and Danny Valencia scoring on a passed ball in the 3rd, the Twins go off to an early lead.

Pitcher Francisco Liriano seemed to have things well in hand, pitching solidly in the first 5 innings.

Then came the 6th.

New York scored 4 runs in the top of the 6th to take the lead.  Liriano left the game with 2 outs and Jose Mijares finished the inning for him.

The Twins tied the game in the bottom of the 6th when CC Sabathia starting walking people left and right, but in the 7th inning Jessie Crain gave up two more runs to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.

Unfortunately, the Twins just couldn’t hit in clutch situations.  The team was 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.  Cuddyer’s two run shot was the only Twins hit that lead to runs, and Thome, who was on base for the homer, didn’t even get there with a hit.  He was hit by a pitch.

So basically, three of Minnesota’s four runs came not because of good hitting, but because of terrible pitches.

The Twins get a shot to even the series tonight with Carl Pavano going against Andy Pettitte.    Hopefully the Twins offense can figure out a way to give Pavano some support.

Francisco Liriano looked good Thursday night against the Rangers after his extended rest.  Fortunately for the Twins he helped Minnesota avoid being swept by Texas, and he beat Cliff Lee to do it.

Liriano pitched 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk.  His first 6 innings were scoreless.  He struck out 6 batters.

Cliff Lee, on the other hand, gave up 5 runs to the Twins in 7 innings.

It’s the second time that the Twins have faced Lee this year, and it’s the second time they’ve won the game.  The first time Lee didn’t get a decision, but Carl Pavano outlasted Lee to get the win for the Twins.  Lee was pitching for Seattle at the time.

The Twins got a home run from Delmon Young and one from Jim Thome.  Cuddyer hit a couple RBIs as well.

Nick Blackburn had his first Major League start in over a month Monday night as he faced the Texas Rangers.  He officially gave the Twins a quality start, going 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 8 hits.  He struck out 5 guys and didn’t walk anyone.

Unfortunately for Blackburn, he was facing Rich Harden, who was on fire.

Harden threw 6.2 innings of no-hit baseball against the Twins.  He gave up 5 walks, but the Twins weren’t able to capitalize on any of the free base runners.  Harden was taken out in the 7th inning after racking up 111 pitches.  The thing that probably saved the Twins from Harden going longer into the game was that he was missing the strike zone on 44% of his pitches.

What wasn’t good for the Twins is that the Rangers bullpen also seemed to be on fire.

If it wasn’t for Joe Mauer getting a 9th inning hit, the Twins would’ve gotten no-hit for the game.

But despite the fact that the Twins managed one hit on the night, they still found themselves with runners in scoring position during 4 separate at-bats.

Hopefully the Twins will be able to give Pavano some more support tonight.
