This is a song by a band from Omaha, Nebraska called The Whipkey Three.

Several years ago I used to be in some bands in the Omaha music scene, and I know the singer of this band.  He’s a really talented guy and a great songwriter.  My bands played with his bands multiple times back in those days, and it was always great to hear them play.

So how can you pass up listening to a great band play a song about the Minnesota Twins?

Here’s the video for you:

After you watch the video be sure to check the band at: http://www.mattwhipkey.com/

DETROIT — Jim Thome didn’t waste any time making history Monday night at Comerica Park.

Just one inning after mashing career home run No. 599, Thome sent a deep blast into the bullpen in left field off Tigers left-hander Daniel Schlereth to become the eighth player in Major League history to reach the 600 home run plateau.

Thome let loose a celebratory fist-pump after rounding first base, and made the trip around the bases to home plate where he was congratulated by his teammates and his family, including his father, Chuck, his wife, Andrea, and his children, Lila and Landon.

“It’s an unbelievable night, obviously,” Thome said. “I think it’s something you never dream of doing. You dream about it, but when it finally happens, it’s kind of surreal. It’s a neat thing, it really is. Hitting home runs can be very difficult.

Will The Twins Fire Ron Gardenhire?

Gardenhire in the hot seat?

Ron+Gardenhire+picture Will The Twins Fire Ron Gardenhire?

I stumbled across this article today and found it to be pretty interesting.

Is it possible that Twins manager Ron Gardenhire is in the hot seat in Minnesota?  He’s been the manager of the Twins for 10 years, and as an organization, the Twins usually aren’t quick to get rid of managers.

Apparently after 10 years as manager of the Minnesota Twins GM Bill Smith is willing, or at the very least looking into, firing manager Ron Gardenhire. Sources close to the situation, whom I have happened to be in contact with and wish to remain anonymous on the condition that they were not allowed to speak of the matter, have said that the Twins are strongly considering firing Ron Gardenhire at the end of the season. This news does come as somewhat of a surprise seeing that the Twins are not ones to fire managers very frequently. Also Gardenhire’s winning percentage, .550, is the third best in franchise history right behind Billy Martin (.599), and Walter Johnson (.570). Gardenhire was manager of the year in 2010, but has failed to reach the World Series in his 10 years of managing.

Although Gardenhire has managed to win 6 AL Divisional Titles in his 9 years as manager his playoff record is definitely not one to brag about. Gardenhire is 6-21 overall, and in divisional series over the last four years is 0-12, and it is no question that Gardenhire has the talent capable to make a deep run in the playoffs. Sources close to the situation also added that even if Gardenhire managed to somehow lead the Twins back this year and win the AL Central it still may not be enough. GM Bill Smith’s standing on the situation is that if the Twins do not make the ALCS this year, then the season will be a failure and a disappointment.

The original article is found here:  Ron Gardenhire To Be Fired At The End Of The Season | Minnesota Twins

Gardy has traditionally managed the team successfully during the regular season.  He has often led the team to a good record even though the Twins haven’t often been big spenders when it comes to acquiring players.

Obviously, though, the story has been different in the post season.

Gardy has gotten the Twins to the playoffs 6 times.  That’s much better than the previous manager, Tom Kelly.  Kelly only took the Twins to the playoffs twice even though he managed 5 more seasons than Gardenhire.

The big difference is, both times Kelly got the Twins to the post season, they won the World Series.

Gardenhire has only won one post-season series as a manager… that being the divisional series in 2002, which was his first year as a manager.  In 2003 and 2004 the Twins lost in the first round of the playoffs, only getting one win in each of those years.

The Twins made it back to the playoffs in 2006, 2009, and 2010.  All three times the Twins were swept in the opening round.

It’ll be interesting to see if there is any truth to this rumor.

Tonight the Twins played another close game with the Kansas City Royals.  When the Twins led by 1 run going into the top of the ninth inning, they once again had to put the ball in the hands of a proven closer.

But this time it wasn’t Matt Capps.

Manager Ron Gardenhire went back to Minnesota favorite Joe Nathan to close the game, and the crowd was not disappointed.

Nathan took the mound to a standing ovation from the Target field crowd, and just about every pitch that he threw was cheered by the fans.  I have to assume part of the cheering was due to the fact that the crowd did NOT want Matt Capps on the mound.

Capps didn’t look happy sitting in the bullpen.

I almost felt bad for him.

Then I remembered that he has blown 7 saves already this season.  At that point I joined in the cheering for Nathan from my own home, and I didn’t feel bad for Capps anymore.

Nathan got the save, the Twins got the win, and it feels like all is right in the Twins world.

I don’t know how much more I can stand of our bullpen blowing games for us. Capps already has 7 blown saves this season. Middle relief is pathetic. Only Nathan and Perkins deserve their spots. Capps, at best, should be demoted to middle relief.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — After facing Joe Mauer in a live batting practice session in Florida on Wednesday morning, Joe Nathan deemed himself close to returning to the Minnesota Twins.

It’s still not quite clear when Nathan’s All-Star catcher will join him.

Nathan pitched to Mauer and Twins prospect Miguel Sano at the team’s spring training headquarters. Nathan has been on the disabled list since May 23 with soreness in his right forearm, a condition related to his recovery from Tommy John surgery last year.

LINKS Sad News: Harmon Killebrew Has Died

A man who wielded significant power in Washington, D.C., in the 1950s and is generally recognized as the first player to admire the parabolic trajectories of self-launched baseballs has died. Harmon Killebrew, slugger supreme, Hall of Famer and civic treasure in the Twin Cities, has joined the great majority, among whom he will stand with distinction because of achievement, friendly persuasion, unusual name and “Killer” nickname.

Killebrew succumbed to esophageal cancer Tuesday at age 74. Diagnosis of the rare disease was made public in late December and he underwent treatment in Arizona, his adopted home state. But he began hospice care on May 13, issuing a statement that said, in part, “I have exhausted all options with respect to controlling this awful disease. My illness has progressed beyond my doctors’ expectation of cure.”

It’s a sad day for Twins fans, and baseball fans in general today, as Minnesota Twins legend Harmon Killebrew has lost his battle with cancer.

The news was released to the media in December that Killebrew was fighting with esophageal cancer.  Just 4 days ago Harmon announced that he was ending treatment.

I’m too young to have seen Killebrew playing for the Twins, but as a Twins fan I’ve read plenty about him over the years.  He was a great hitter, who until 2009 had hit more home runs than any right-handed hitter in American League History.  He was a good defensive player, and more importantly, a good man.

You’ll be missed, Harmon!
