The Minnesota Twins have played in 9 series so far this year. They’ve won 8 of them. However, today’s win over the Detroit Tigers marks the first time in those 8 series wins that the Twins have swept their opponents!
The first sweep comes at a great time, too. The Tigers entered the series in second place in the AL Central, only a half a game back from the Minnesota Twins. Three straight victories by the Twins pushed the Tigers to 3.5 games back. Even though it’s early in the season, breathing room is always nice.
The win improves the Twins record to 19-9 which ties them (for the moment at least) with Tampa Bay for the best record in baseball. (The Rays have a game later tonight, though).
Kevin Slowey took the hill for the Twins today. He didn’t quite get the quality start, making it only 5 2/3rds innings, but he only gave up 3 runs, which was good enough to get the win. He walked 2 and struck out 3. Jon Rauch got his 8th save of the season. It’s been a awhile since the Twins were able to put him in a save situation. He gave up 1 run in the 9th, but the Twins had a 2 run lead to work with.
Michael Cuddyer and Justin Morneau added to their growing RBI counts. Cuddyer hit his 22nd of the season, and Morneau hit his 19th. Jason Kubel (11) and Denard Span (13) each hit one as well.
After a hot start in the Big Leagues, Wilson Ramos had his second straight “eh” game. He went 0 for 4. Of course that’s to be expected. He’s still hitting .438, so he probably still has a little ways to go before he’s completely back down to earth.
The Twins were only 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position. Despite the fact that the Twins are playing very well, that needs to change.
