September 22, 1968 – Cesar Tovar plays one inning at each position for the Minnesota Twins, becoming only the second major leaguer in history to do it; Bert Campaneris of the Oakland Athletics was the first. He started the game on the mound, ironically facing Campaneris as the leadoff hitter. Scott Sheldon and Shane Halter later became the only other two men to accomplish this feat. September 22, 1911 – Cy Young, at age 44, beats the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1 – 0, for his 511th and final major league victory. September 22, 1993:Pitcher Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers faces just three Seattle batters before hurting his right elbow. Ryan finishes his career with 324 wins, 5714 strikeouts and seven no hitters. September 22, 1969 – Willie Mays hits the 600th home run of his career. The historic homer off Mike Corkins of the Padres proves to be the game-winner in a 4 – 2 Giants victory at San Diego Stadium. September 22, 1990 – Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs steals his 300th base in an 11 – 5 loss to the New York Mets, Joining Willie Mays as the only players in major league history with 300 home runs, 300 steals and 2000 hits.

The Twins didn’t score after the first inning yesterday, but they didn’t need to.

Michael Cuddyer batted in Matt Tolbert (who reached on a fielders choice) and Jason Kubel (who reached on a walk) in the first inning, and then the Twins pitching took over for the rest of the game.

Francisco Liriano pitched a great game, giving the Twins 7 full innings with only 1 run on 3 hits and a walk.  He struck out 9 guys.

I don’t want to get my hopes up too much, but it looked like the Dominant Liriano came out to play.

I’m hoping he’ll stick around this time.

Perkins came in and did his thing in the 8th inning, and Capps closed it out in the 9th for the save.

Hitting wasn’t too impressive.  The Twins also only had 3 hits, and two of them came from Michael Cuddyer.  The other was from Ben Revere.  The Twins managed to take 4 walks, though, so at least they were finding a way to get people on base.

The next step is for them to learn to drive those people home!

The Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners Sunday to complete their second straight series sweep and their 8th win in a row.

Francisco Liriano was brilliant for the 3rd straight game.   He hasn’t given up a run since the 8th inning of his July 16th game against the Chicago White Sox.  Yesterday he went 2 innings, giving up only 2 hits and 2 walks and striking out 11 batters.

Jason Kubel had 3 RBIs yesterday to support Liriano’s pitching dominance.  He went 2 for 4 on the day.  Valencia also got an RBI, and also went 2 for 4.

Twins Lose 3 out of 4 in Seattle

Minnesota had a rough trip to Seattle this week, winning the first game then dropping 3 in a row to the Mariners.  The Twins seemed to have struggle scoring in those last 3 games, only getting 1 run in each of them.  Luckily for the Twins the Tigers aren’t all that hot lately either, so Minnesota hasn’t been losing as much ground lately as they could have been after this series and the recent series with the Yankees.

Boxscore

Francisco Liriano got the win in the first game of the series, giving the Twins another quality start.  After having several bad games in a row, Liriano is snapping back, pitching well in his last few games.  He’s 5-3 overall now, and he has the lowest ERA among Twins starters at 3.29.  In this game he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings off of  8 hits.  He had no walks and 7 strike outs.  Crain and Guerrier held the game for closer Jon Rauch who got his 13th save of the year.

Delmon Young, Michael Cuddyer, and Jason Kubel all hit homers during the game.  Cuddyer added an additional RBI as well.

Justin Morneau had a good game from the plate, going 3 for 4.

t1 morneau si The Twins Drop 3 of 4 to the MarinersGame 2 was not pretty.  Nick Blackburn struggled in the 4th inning, giving up 4 runs to put the Mariners up 5 -1, but it wouldn’t have mattered if he had gotten out of that inning with no runs.  The Twins couldn’t manage to put anything together from the plate.  Their only run came from a solo home run by Justin Morneau.  The Twins were 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position, and they left 7 stranded.

Boxscore

My boxscore isn’t working correctly, but this game went into extra innings.  It was decided by a run scored by Seattle in the bottom of the 10th.  Kevin Slowey successfully dueled with Cliff Lee through 7 innings, giving up only 1 run in the 7th, but the Twins weren’t able to come through for him.

For the second straight night, the Twins only run came from a solo home run, this time from Michael Cuddyer.  The Twins were 0-5 with runners in scoring position and left 5 stranded.

Game 4 Score

Pavano was solid except for a 4 run 3rd inning, but it didn’t matter.  For the third straight day, the Twins scored only one run.

This time they didn’t struggle with hitting with runners in scoring position.  They were actually 1-1 in that situation.  Instead they struggled getting runners into scoring position.  7 base runners, and the Twins could only get 1 of them beyond first base.  Morneau batted in  Mauer, who was the only baserunner beyond first for the night.
